GREAT TEAMS START WITH GREAT PEOPLE.
Meet Todd Johnston
What is the most interesting thing about you that your teammates at MorganFranklin do not know?
I started off as a history major before realizing the economics of that decision. But my love of history has never left me. I believe it is incredibly important to understand the past and learn from those who came before us.
Please tell us about your professional background and what led you to pursue a career at MorganFranklin.
My experience is in delivering solutions across a range of financial, operational, technological, and organizational transformation projects to Public Sector clients. Consulting provides the opportunity to support clients across a broad set of domains. I have been very lucky in my career to provide a variety of transformational initiatives like: financial analysis, cost modeling, financial statement compilation, business process improvement, risk management, and major enterprise resource planning (ERP) migrations.
Every organization says “you can own your own career,” but for most organizations it is nothing more than a saying. MorganFranklin convinced me it was more than just a tagline and that is why I joined. I took a leap of faith and my decision has been rewarded every step of the way.
What is your role in the Government sector at MorganFranklin, and what do you do specifically?
I am a Senior Manager at MorganFranklin, specializing in directing financial and business process transformation projects to our Public Sector clients. I’m currently managing a project involving complex business process transformation with a client migrating from siloed legacy systems to an integrated ERP environment. In addition to my client work, I manage Public Sector business development efforts in the southeastern market.
What about the MorganFranklin culture is different from other companies where you have worked?
It is actually a team and everyone understands we are in this together. As I mentioned earlier, you own your own career at MorganFranklin, but that does not mean you are on your own. We have a great group of professionals who have each other’s best interest in mind.
How have you taken ownership of your career development at MorganFranklin? What does “surpassing expectations” mean to you?
I believe expanding business development opportunities is the next step in my career evolution. My success and failures in this area are crucial to my development as a professional and I thoroughly enjoy the challenge!
To me, surpassing expectations means challenging yourself to keep learning and to keep getting better. Obstacles will present themselves, but if you can keep going then you will be surprised with what you can accomplish for your clients, MorganFranklin, and yourself.
What characteristics and disciplines do you need to be successful in your role at MorganFranklin?
You have to love challenges. You have to be resilient and willing to think outside the box. You have to understand that it is not all about you. We solve our client’s biggest problems and it takes a team to do that.
What has been your favorite MorganFranklin project and why?
A large federal client engaged us to lead a complex financial transformation effort impacting every domain of their operating environment. The client was assessing their as-is operating environment and associated internal controls while simultaneously migrating from siloed legacy systems to an integrated-ERP platform. The necessity to balance competing, yet interrelated priorities was challenging. However, guiding the client through this transformation was an incredibly rewarding experience.
If you could learn any new skill (personal or professional), what would it be?
I would love to learn programing across various computer languages. Technology is moving fast and the ability to understand the underlying workings is very beneficial.
What does an ideal day — including work and your personal life — look like for you?
An ideal day consists of my son running into my bedroom to let me know “it is morning,” solving a client’s complex problem (in which the solution was not readily apparent), and then spending the evening with my beautiful wife and son.
What books are at your bedside?
12 Rules for Life – An Antidote to Chaos and The Bible.
