Meet Matt Pencek

How would your peers (work or personal) describe you?

My work peers would describe me as being very focused on finding the best solution for our client and then taking it one step further to ensure they are truly happy with it. I really enjoy helping my clients connect macro-level trends to tangible impacts on their businesses.

Peers in my personal life would describe me as never taking myself too seriously and always up to having a good time. I love being around people.

What is your current role at MorganFranklin, and what, specifically, do you do?

I am currently a Director focused on strategy as well as finance and business transformation.  One area that I am particularly excited about is my role helping lead the launch of our Private Equity Portfolio Services offering. Realizing that private equity firms are experiencing unique challenges today, our offering provides cross-functional services for private equity investors.  From entry to exit, we serve as a soup-to-nuts service provider for private equity firms looking to achieve superior returns.

Another part of my role helping continue the growth of our Private Equity that I really enjoy is helping others define their career objectives and guide them through building their skillsets to achieve their goals. I grow and learn just as much during this process as they do.

What appealed to you about a career in finance?

I started my career in accounting, and it provided me with a great foundation to build my knowledge of business. I see accounting as the scoreboard of business, and in order to win at any game, you need to know the score. Getting into finance and strategy appealed to me because it gave me the tools to decide what plays to call to win the game.

Finance is so powerful because of what it enables and empowers people and companies to do, and I really enjoy helping companies harness this power to achieve their objectives.

You have held multiple positions at MorganFranklin in the past five years. How have you taken ownership of growing that career at MorganFranklin?

I joined MorganFranklin with a desire to transition to a more forward-focused and enterprise value-driven career. My first engagements at the firm were focused on the accounting side of Mergers and Acquisitions transactions, as I am a CPA. As I got more involved in Mergers and Acquisitions, I gained exposure to the other facets of transactions outside of the accounting realm and really enjoyed broadening my skillset.

Then the surge in the equity markets in 2013 and 2014 enabled me to gain exposure to advising growth companies through the IPO process. An IPO is one of the most exciting times in a company’s life, and having a team of cross-functional experts is essential. I entered with accounting skills, but being part of that fast-paced environment enabled me develop other key skills in finance and strategy very quickly in a thrilling environment.

It was this thrill and thirst for more that led me to pursue my MBA. My MBA experience exposed me to a wide network of successful and purpose-driven people, and it enabled me to develop my skillset to better serve our clients and further my career objectives. The mentors that I have had at the firm and the culture of “Own Your Career” has created the incubator for me to grow at MorganFranklin.

You work with a lot of venture capital and private equity firms. What is your favorite thing about working with these types of firms?

The pace at which value gets created in this type of environment is exhilarating, and it is even more exciting to be the one creating it. The focus is on building great companies and maximizing value creation. With that focus comes a mentality and a standard of success that is higher than most industries, and consistently succeeding in this environment is tough. This challenge excites me.

What advice would you give to someone hoping to pursue a career at MorganFranklin?

An entrepreneurial spirit with an intellectual curiosity and an unsurpassed work ethic are traits that are essential for great consultants. MorganFranklin is a place where professionals who want to gain exposure to relevant business issues and help companies solve tough issues come to build their skillset.

A lot of our folks come from the Big Four or Big Three where they started their career in a firm of thousands of people. They were put into a regiment that said, “In order to make it to senior, and make it to manager, and make it to partner, this is how many years you are going to have to be here.”

At MorganFranklin, we are looking for people that are willing to put in the work to build their skills and own their career. Our culture at MorganFranklin enables that and empowers it.

The best performers at MorganFranklin are those that are excited to tackle new problems and look at situations outside of their comfort zone as opportunities to learn something new and step up to the plate.

What do you think is unique about the culture at MorganFranklin?

MorganFranklin’s culture values merit-based success in an environment that encourages employees at all levels to be innovative and entrepreneurial. In many professional services organizations, the duties of defining the service offerings, building the business, and managing client relationships are usually reserved for the top leaders. Our firm’s culture encourages everyone in the organization to do these things. In fact, some of our most successful service offerings have developed as a result of ideas brought forward by less seasoned individuals in our firm.

What has been your favorite MorganFranklin project?

It is hard to pick one, so I would say that I have really enjoyed advising companies through IPOs. They have been challenging, but the impacts I have seen our services have on organizations are tremendous.

We enable some amazing products and services to reach new markets and have seen some of our clients successfully double and triple their workforces. This has real, meaningful impact on the communities around them and the economy, as a whole. Helping enable growth of companies is extremely fulfilling both professionally and personally.

What has been your favorite team, or corporate activity, or event hosted by MorganFranklin?

We were on the road putting in long hours to help a client complete a transaction. Our team had rented this big cheesy van that week and, at the end of the night, the team piled into it to head to the hotel, delirious from the long hours. On our way back, somebody spoke up and said, “Hey, is anybody hungry?” Surprisingly, everybody was up for a late night feast. The only thing open was an empty Waffle House. We stopped in and completely gorged ourselves.

During our “lavish” meal, we laughed uncontrollably about the entire week and all of the crazy things we overcame. We all had this sense of accomplishment and pride in how much work we put in and how we stuck to our commitment of delivering for our client.

It was that kind of moment that you feel like you are really part of a team and that the work is more than just financial models and reports. The long hours and challenges, in a weird way, were very rewarding.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I am a Clemson Tiger, and I love getting together with fellow Tigers, especially during the football season.

I also love being outside and getting my hands dirty. My wife and I just bought a farm with plans to start a vineyard and event space, so that will feed my outdoor side for the considerable future!
